Tide Gauge Building Refurbishment

Commercial

The Tide Gauge building is a historic and iconic building with a unique setting in the Whangārei Harbour. The wharf and building was built in the 1960s to support the local industry and provide facilities for the Northland Harbour Board and waterside workers. It also houses the Tide Gauge Machine which reads the harbour tides, previously providing important information for visiting vessels and the former Whangārei port.

In 2020, on behalf of Port Nikau, DC Group undertook a major renovation of the building, which was run down and disused. The building interior was re-designed to achieve a functional modern space while retaining the architecture of the iconic building architecture. Upstairs has been converted into a spacious office and base for the Port Nikau development while the lower storey is now a café and restaurant with outstanding views from a unique on-water setting.

The Tide Gauge Machine still sits in the exact place where it was once read daily by the Port’s electronics engineer until the mid-1990s.
